RockvilleArtLeague.org Vol. XIX No. 1 September 2009 RockvilleArtLeague.org Vol. XX No. 1 September 2010 Next meeting Thursday, September 2nd at 7:00pm Hands on Demo by Ed Moore of Plaza Art PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear fellow artists and art lovers, I hope you have all had a wonderful and creative summer despite the heat, earthquake and tornado! I look forward to seeing you all at our first fall/end of summer meeting. The September 2nd meeting is going to be a hands on demo by Ed Moore of Plaza Art. He is going to show us how to make transfers, and is going to let us try our hand at it. He will be bringing most supplies, but if you have a specific image you would like to play with – you are welcome to bring it, just make sure it is a photocopy or laser print of the image you want to use, it cannot be an inkjet print, and the cheaper and thinner the paper the better. Inkjet prints do not transfer. So if in doubt, get a photocopy made at Kinko’s or some other office supply store. As of this summer I have taken over the position as President of the Rockville Art League and want to give a great big thanks to Susan Schellberg our wonderful leader over the last three years. Our summer show at the Unitarian Church of Rockville looks fabulous and I encourage those of you who have not seen it to visit it at 100 Welsh Park Drive · Rockville, Maryland 20850. For directions go to: http://www.uucr.org and click on map and directions. Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who helped hang the RAL show at UUCR and to those who helped with the refreshment at the opening of on August 8th. We had two paintings sell at the reception – congratulations to both Martha Campos and Sara Sittlig on their sales! Pick-up for the show will be on Sunday September 12th from Noon to 1:00PM or Monday September 13th between 10:00 and 3:00. As you might know we have started a Facebook page for RAL. You can find it by typing Rockville Art League into the find bar in your face book page or at this link:http://www.facebook.com/pages/Rockville-Art-League/119213408124065. Sri Prabha was nice enough to set that up for us, but he is moving to Florida at the end of September so I am looking for a volunteer who would like to be in charge of the page. I encourage all members to "like" the page, i.e. to become fans of the page (by clicking the thumbs up "like" sign). That way you can participate by posting info on your own upcoming shows, calls for entries you think might interest other members and pictures of your work. It is meant as a tool to bring the group closer, and help keep tabs of what is going on the art community. The October meeting will be a social and fun gathering dedicated to explaining the Facebook page, help members sign up for their own Facebook page if they do not have one. But more about that in next month’s newsletter. September is also our month for collecting dues. Please mail your checks payable to the RAL to Susan Dunnell at 11215 DEWEY ROAD, Kensington MD. 20895. The membership dues are now $35.00 and are due by September 1st of each year. You may also drop off the check at our September meeting, on September 2nd. If dues are not paid by November 1st, a late fee of $5.00 will be charged, bringing the dues to $40.00. A big thanks to Alice Timmins who has volunteered to scan RAL‘s historical documents which have been in storage with Patria Baranski. The position of Program Coordinator is now open – please let me know if you are interested. I held this position for 3 years and found it a fun and rewarding position. It’s a great way to get to know people, not only in our own group, but in the art world in general. The Sugarloaf Craft Festival wants us to know they are looking for exhibitors – their contact info if you are interested is: Sugarloaf Craft Festivals - (410) 528-5400 - dan@sugarloaffest.com. Hope to see everyone in September. Liliane Blom – President RAL QUOTE OF THE MONTH

The first class: Skill Building for Greater Visual Impact focuses on the development of skills and techniques through Eastern and Western cultural traditions as well as materials and techniques unique to world cultures that will make your artwork more visually dynamic, with a more modern approach. Each class will explore a classical approach by a specific culture and then you will adapt the contributions of that group to the development of your own artwork. Classes Thursdays from Sept.30 thru Dec. 9th, 9-11:30. The second class: Rebel Artists That Changed Modern Art focuses on the techniques of the art fundamentals of important contemporary masters such as Monet, Degas, Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso, Schwitters, and Rauschenberg, including historical art movements such as Impressionism, Expressionism, Early Cubism, and Dadaism. Students develop their own work as inspired by these Modern Masters. Classes Tuesdays from Oct.5 thru Dec. 7th, 9--11:30. ON-GOING SHOWS Chair person: Diane Jeang (301) 871-1589 E-mail: swinedoc@yahoo.com I am continuing with the On-Going shows for next year, but I'm looking for new venues for the shows. There has been interest lately in getting some more shows, so if you know of a place interested in hanging artwork on a rotating basis, please let me know. I have forms for signing up new establishments. I would need to know the name of the place, contact person, what type of artwork, how many, and any restrictions. Doctors, dentists, law offices and other businesses are good places, as well as restaurants and banks. Bookstores are also excellent. We may be considering some places that would require jurying (but we would continue the tradition of the "open" shows of course). Thank you, Diane Jeang
