RockvilleArtLeague.org Vol. XIX No. 6 February 2010 Next Meeting February, 4th 2010 at 7:30 pm Speaker Robert Bettman- founder and editor of Arts Magazine "Bourgeon" Greetings, Our February meeting will feature Robert Bettmann (founder and editor of arts magazine Bourgeon). He will be talking about marketing art work, writing artist’s statements, establishing websites, using business cards, flyers, social media and blogs. This should be an informative and exciting evening. We have rescheduled our critique with Millie Schott for our March meeting. Hopefully, everyone was informed about cancellation of the January meeting, via e-mail and the telephone committee. Thanks to Pat Schocke for sending out e-mails and to Irene Glaser and the telephone committee for letting people know. It is hard to predict when weather might be a problem so we have to use our best judgment. Most board members felt that with the prediction of snow, the night of our January meeting, the extremely cold weather and still present ice that it would be best to cancel. The annual student show is coming up soon and Marian is going to need volunteers to help. RAL co-sponsors the show with the City of Rockville for all Rockville school children from kindergarten through 12th grade. I have found this to be one of the most rewarding things we do. The children are always so excited when they drop off their art-work and at the opening when they see it hanging. If you can volunteer to help you will not have to pay the $5 entry fee for our juried members show in May. The Unitarian Church in Rockville has offered to let us have an RAL show in either July or Sept. This would not be a juried show but an opportunity for members to display their work. We will have more information about the exact dates and the number of pieces that can be hung once the board has worked out the logistics. Our new RAL flyer has attracted two new members. There are currently a stack of them at Plaza and we will be distributing them to other venues. BOARD MEMBER NEWS I would like to welcome three of our newest board members. Carole Celler joined the board in September as our new secretary. She has been a member for two years. While working fulltime managing a medical practice Carole had her own calligraphy business. She has a BFA from Syracuse Univ. and upon retirement began teaching tole painting and taking classes in watercolor and acrylics. Susan Dunnel is our new membership chairperson. She has been drawing and painting since childhood and has been studying watercolor with a variety of teachers for many years. She attended Traphagen School of Design in NYC. She currently works for the Federal Government as an analyst. In addition to painting she plays classical piano and writes poetry. Martha Campos is our new hospitality chairperson. Martha was born in Quito, Ecuador and received a BA in Modern Arts at the American School of Quito. She worked for the Inter-American Development Bank for 39 years and the Embassy of Bolivia. Martha has studied painting at the Corcoran School of Art, The Inter-American Development Bank Painting Group and the Jewish Community Center. She has exhibited in numerous groups and individual shows in the Washington DC area and at various embassies. Susan Schellberg, President RAL QUOTE OF THE MONTH
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED for 2010 STUDENT ART SHOW As in years past, the Rockville Art League and the City of Rockville co-sponsor the annual Rockville Student Art Show. Many volunteers are needed to make this a success. As you can see from the list below there are many different jobs, very similar to our own member show. If you are interested please contact me at 301-590-9437, mackerer@comcast.net, or sign up at the February meeting. Thank you, Marian MacKerer

ON-GOING SHOWS Chair person: Diane Jeang (301) 871-1589 E-mail: swinedoc@yahoo.com I am continuing with the On-Going shows for next year, but I'm looking for new venues for the shows. There has been interest lately in getting some more shows, so if you know of a place interested in hanging artwork on a rotating basis, please let me know. I have forms for signing up new establishments. I would need to know the name of the place, contact person, what type of artwork, how many, and any restrictions. Doctors, dentists, law offices and other businesses are good places, as well as restaurants and banks. Bookstores are also excellent. We may be considering some places that would require jurying (but we would continue the tradition of the "open" shows of course). Thank you, Diane Jeang
