RockvilleArtLeague.org Vol. XVIII No. 10 June 2009 NEXT MEETING - THURSDAY, JUNE 4th AT 7:30 pm Bring two pieces of art for the critique Message from the President Susan Susan Schellberg Greetings: Another RAL year is ending for the summer. We’ve had two very successful member shows and I would like to congratulate everyone who entered, whether your work was selected or not. We all know how hard rejection is but it takes courage to put your work out there regardless of the results. Even though the weather was terrible and I was a bit loopy from jet lag we had a big turnout for the spring show opening. We also had a lot of fun at the walk-through. Once again thanks to Marian for doing such a terrific job (as always) with our shows. I’m sure you will all be pleased to know that Marian has agreed to stay on as show coordinator for another year. The Glenview Mansion staff is extremely pleased with her decision. Also thanks to Sandra and her two volunteers Anna Shuman and Dr. Bert Zabar for the refreshments and hospitality. We’ve had a lot of volunteer help this year on the member shows, the student show and at the monthly meetings not to mention the work of our individual board members. All the help is very much appreciated and makes for a stronger organization. We realize not everyone is able to volunteer, their time, but entering the shows, having solo or group shows in our various venues and attending some of our monthly meetings are all important ways of contributing to the overall success of RAL. Our last meeting of the year will be on June 4th and it will be a critique, with Claudia Rousseau. Dr. Rousseau was very apologetic about missing the last critique and we have rescheduled her for June 4th. Each member may bring in two pieces of artwork. We will try to get to everyone and will have a sign-up sheet. Our critiques have been very popular but we have managed to get through everyone as long as we budgeted the time. Liliane is already working on exciting programs for the fall. Our September meeting will feature Virginia artist, Chica Brunswold, giving a demo on experimental watercolor techniques. This should be a terrific meeting. Chica’s work has been featured in the Artists Magazine. She is a well know watercolor artist and teacher. Several of our members donated art work to the new Montgomery County Family Justice Center. Thanks to all of you who donated work and for helping RAL to be of service to our community. We have a new secretary for the board. Carole Celler has agreed to take on the secretary position starting in September. Shirley Barnhart, who has served as secretary for three years is stepping down. Thank you Shirley for all your work. We still need someone to take over the hospitality chair. Sandra Levine will be taking the vice- president’s position and needs someone to take over her role on refreshments. Please let me know if you can help us out. Diane Jeang has secured a new and exciting venue, for members, to have continuing shows. The Montgomery County Innovation Center would like our artists to display their work for two month periods. The center is located in the same building as Vis Arts. People can exhibit individually or in groups. Specific information is in this newsletter under continuing shows. Thanks Diane for arranging this. Just a reminder to let us know about any changes in e-mail addresses if you want to make sure you get the newsletter. The newsletter is also posted on our website and can be printed off the website. Hope to see many of you at the June meeting. I wish that you all have a great summer and hopefully a lot of time to create art. I have a lot of reference material from my trip to Sicily so am planning to be busy painting. Susan E. Schellberg, President QUOTE OF THE MONTH

Welcome to our new members Welcome to our new members Ann Bennet, Mary Dalto, Karma Massoud, Fred b. Ruckdeschel, Brain Coyne, Sri Prabha and Belinda Russell. Ann Bennet has an art background going back to her 4 years at the High School of Music and Art in NY. After a 45 year hiatus she retired from a career in tutoring dyslexic children and returned to her first love. Ann’s mediums are pastels and monoprints. She has been taking classes at Montgomery College. She is a juried member of the Maryland Pastel Society and has exhibited locally at the Ratner Museum and at the Foundry Gallery where she was a member for five years. She is pleased to be a member of the Rockville Art League. Fred Ruckdeschel currently works in collage, which RAL's Pat Zannie introduced to him in her classes in the School of Art & Design at MC Tacoma Park. Formerly he worked in clay, silver, silk screen, and fired enamels. About 20 years ago he was president of the National Enamelist Guild, a DC area group. Now a retired economist, he plans to focus on designing in several media, including a garden. He especially likes collage and enameling because they both allow many avenues for creativity. ON-GOING SHOWS Chair person: Diane Jeang (301) 871-1589 E-mail: swinedoc@yahoo.com I am continuing with the On-Going shows for next year, but I'm looking for new venues for the shows. There has been interest lately in getting some more shows, so if you know of a place interested in hanging artwork on a rotating basis, please let me know. I have forms for signing up new establishments. I would need to know the name of the place, contact person, what type of artwork, how many, and any restrictions. Doctors, dentists, law offices and other businesses are good places, as well as restaurants and banks. Bookstores are also excellent. We may be considering some places that would require jurying (but we would continue the tradition of the "open" shows of course). Thank you, Diane Jeang
